Rooney Scores As Man United Beat West Ham Comfortably

Wayne Rooney scored his first goal in almost five months as he helped Man United secure a comfortable 3-0 win over West Ham at Old Trafford.

Rooney and Ryan Giggs returned to the starting line-up, replacing Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park. Edwin Van Der Sar was in goal with John O’Shea, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra making up the defence. Luis Nani, Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher joined Giggs in midfield with Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov up front.

Rooney opened up the scoring through a penalty after Ryan Giggs was clipped in the area by Jonathan Spector. That was followed by some pressure from Man United on the Hammers goal, with Fletcher bringing out a class save from Rob Green.

Man United went into halftime with a comfortable 1-0 lead, only give minutes into the second half Nani doubled United’s lead. Scholes found Rooney, he flicked the ball on to Nani who skipped past Gabbidon, ran into the penalty area and hit the ball past Green.

With 69 minutes on the clock, Berbatov scored a well-deserved goal. A superb cross by Nani was volleyed in by Berbatov.

Overall it was a good performance from the team, there probably should have been more goals scored but there can't be too many complaints. Berbatov had a great game and thoroughly deserved his goal and Scholes had another great game in the midfield.

Sir Alex Ferguson was also impressed with those two players, after the game he told ESPN:

"We put in a very good performance. We had plenty of possession and, while we could have scored more, the key goal was always going to be the first one. I thought our link-up play was excellent, and the way Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov, in particular, directed our play did not go unnoticed. So yes, I'm very pleased."

There is now an International break but Manchester United's next game is a 12:45 GMT kick-off away to Everton on the 11th September.
