Reaction To Ferdinand Captaincy

Sports News - February 06, 2010

After John Terry was stripped of the England captaincy on Friday, it was awarded to Rio Ferdinand. Many associated with Man United have come out to say that Ferdinand was the right choice and they believe he is the right successor.

Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said:

"We are pleased for him and it's great for Manchester United to have one of our players captaining our country”
"Over the years we've had Gary (Neville), Bobby Charlton and Bryan Robson for 60-odd games or something so we're very proud of that."

Man United captain Gary Neville said:

"It's a great honour to captain your country”
"Rio's done very well for England over a long time and he's vice-captain so he was the natural successor. It's great for the club to have an England captain."

Ferdinand’s team-mate Michael Carrick said:

"Rio's a terrific leader and a terrific captain. He's a world-class player”

"He's done it in the Champions League final and won it, so it won't faze him in that respect.
"Rio has the respect of the players and that's an important thing so I'm sure he'll be successful.
"Once you're on the pitch you've all got to lead in some way so I don't think it will affect things too much."

Ferdinand’s former team-mate (now Ipswich manager) Roy Keane said:

"Rio will be a good captain, of course he will be”
"He's a top player and has been for a long time and he will bring different qualities (to the captaincy)."

They may have been happy to praise Ferdinand and speak about the England captaincy but the England manager Fabio Capello didn’t want to talk about it.

He said: "I want to speak about this but first I want to speak with Rio and the other players.
"We will speak about the new captain then. Usually I prefer to speak with the players, not the journalists. I understand you but you have to understand me."

When asked when he was going to talk to Ferdinand about it, Capello replied: "March".

Man United Hit Portsmouth For Five

Sports News - February 06, 2010
Yesterday afternoon Man United destroyed Portsmouth with a five-goal haul at Old Trafford. A hat-trick of own goals, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov took Man United back to the top of the table.

Ahead of the game Rooney picked up his award for the Barclays Premier League player for the month of January. That was then followed by a minute silence to remember all who died after the horrific Munich Air Disaster.

United got off to a bright start, penning Portsmouth back into their own half and applying some pressure for the first 10 minutes but with no real chances on goal.

Jonny Evans had the games first proper chance; Evans headed Gary Neville’s ball in from a short corner just wide of the upright. That seemed to wake Pompey up and they went straight down the other end and created they’re first opportunity.

Former United player Danny Webber led the breakaway, slid the ball in to Vanden Borre, who had a shot pushed away for a corner by Edwin Van Der Sar.
The corner was easily dealt with but Portsmouth tried to sustain some pressure on the United goal with a shot from Nadir Belhadj shooting from distance, but it was easily held by the United keeper Van Der Sar.

Football - Manchester United v Portsmouth Barclays Premier LeagueUnited were frustrated for large parts of the first half but the game, we had the possession, a few goal attempts on and off target. With just over half an hour gone the game livened up again. Portsmouth broke with four players against three Man United defenders; O’Hara slid the ball in to Belhadj who had his shot cleared off the line by Evans.

That was swiftly followed by Berbatov missing a sitter from just six yards out. Neville ran into the Pompey penalty area, pulled the ball back for Berbatov who put the ball wrong side of the post.

With just six minutes left to play in the first half United carried on the attacking intent, which paid off. United played another short corner, this time it was played to Darren Fletcher who crossed the ball in and Rooney was there to nod the ball into the back of the net and give United the lead.

United’s lead was doubled just before half time. 45 minutes in Luis Nani’s cross deflected off Borre and rolled over the line past Pompey keeper David James.

Halftime gave the visiting side a chance to regroup but that didn’t last long. Portsmouth failed to clear the ball, which fell to Michael Carrick 25-yards out, his strike at goal took a deflection off Portsmouth’s Richard Hughes, hit the underside of the crossbar fell the right side of the line for United.

Football - Manchester United v Portsmouth Barclays Premier LeagueMinutes later, Man United had four. Berbatov picked up the ball inside the penalty area, with a defender next to him he kept hold of the ball but made his way out of the area, he then turned and saw his fantastic 25-yard shot hit the back of the net. Superb goal by Berbatov and definitely made amends for the awful miss in the first half.

Sir Alex Ferguson decided to make a triple substitution with only 56 minutes gone on the clock. Berbatov was taken off, replaced by Mame Biram Diouf. Rooney and Fletcher were also taken off, they were replaced by Michael Owen and Darron Gibson.

United’s final goal came 69 minutes in, Patrice Evra’s ball into the box was stuck past James by his own team-mate Marc Wilson.

With 20 minutes to go and United 5-0 up it was all Man United. Diouf missed a glorious chance when Owen put him through on goal, he had done the hard part but the shot was blazed over the bar.

The game finished 5-0 to United, an easy win, which has done our goal difference the world of good. Today Chelsea play Arsenal down at Stamford Bridge, if Chelsea lose or draw then United will be staying top of the table tonight.

Manchester United vs Portsmouth

Football - Fulham v Portsmouth Barclays Premier League
A win tomorrow for Man United will take them top of the table ahead of the clash between Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. United go into the game against Pompey off the back of the 3-1 win over Arsenal last weekend down at the Emirates.

Man United may have started to hit some form but Portsmouth on the other hand have been struggling down at the bottom of the table, their financial situation doesn’t help matters either.

United defender Nemanja Vidic has been linked with a move away but this week he has returned to training and may feature. United are still without Rio Ferdinand, who will be serving his second out of a four-match suspension.

Portsmouth have Papa Bouba Diop, Michael Brown and Tommy Smith all doubtful, with Herman Hreidarsson definitely out.

I can’t see Portsmouth getting anything out of tomorrows game, United are looking good with Rooney at the heart of it. Nani is full of confidence at the moment so I can’t see him being dropped to the bench, so hopefully he and Wayne can start to forge a partnership.

I haven’t seen many Portsmouth matches this season but many say that they have been unlucky and should have picked up more points. Pompey will try and contain United, so expect most of the game to be played in the Portsmouth half but once the first goes it then they will crumble.

Predicted Man United starting XI- Edwin Van Der Sar, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Antonio Valencia, Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Luis Nani, Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney.

Predicted result- Manchester United 3-0 Portsmouth

Vidic On His Way Out?

Soccer: Training - Manchester United May 20
Man United defender Nemanja Vidic will leave United this summer, according to his team-mates. The Guardian are reporting that Man United players are resigned to losing the centre-back and are openly talking about it.

Over recent month’s Vidic’s wife has been quoted as saying that she is ‘unhappy’ living in Manchester but Vidic himself has denied this, he has also denied that he wanted to leave.

Speculation has again resurfaced since Man United confirmed that they will be signing Chris Smalling from Fulham, this summer. It is believed that Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan are all interested in signing the player.

The latest rumours this morning are that AC Milan are set to match Real Madrid and offer United with a bid worth £20 million. The bid from Milan is thought to be striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar plus cash.

Hargreaves Exclusion Casts Doubts On His Career

Close call for Manchester United player Owen Hargreaves as Patrice Evra high kicks during preparation for tomorrow nights UEFA Champions League group match against Roma
Long-term absentee Owen Hargreaves has been left out of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 25-man Champions League squad for the remainder of this season, which would probably suggest that he will also miss this summers World Cup.

Hargreaves has been suffering with a tendonitis problem ever since joining Man United in 2007. In November 2008 renowned knee surgeon, Richard Steadman, days later he was having surgery on his right knee. In January 2009, Hargreaves was having a similar procedure done on his left knee, leaving Hargreaves out for the rest of the season.

Initially 29-year old Hargreaves was set to be included in the squad but it has been revealed today that young defender Ritchie De Laet has been drafted in to replace the midfielder.

It was only last September that Hargreaves sounded confident of a return but surely this will be seen as a huge setback. Not only does it put a big question mark on his Man United career but also his England career with the World Cup coming up.

Hargreaves had said: “It will be an amazing feeling to run out at Old Trafford again. I’ll be so excited I’ll probably pass out”

“I just want to be part of it again, to be available and healthy. I can’t wait to get involved.

“I want to be able to pull on the shirt and have an effect on games. I just want to compete in matches, work with the coaches to improve my game and become a better player.

“I want a good season to repay the faith shown in me by the United fans.”

On the 21st November 2009, Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson did say that the next stage of the recovery process for Hargreaves was ‘self belief’.

Sir Alex Ferguson had told the Manchester Evening News in November: “Owen is training very well. It is more of a confidence thing for the lad to come back into full training with us.”

“He is doing quite good work with the physios and football-related training but he is not a competitive level at the moment.”

“He has been out for a year and two months, so we are of the opinion that he should take his time and not rush it. In that respect, he needs to get his confidence back.”

Hargreaves is a highly rated midfielder, I am sure if he was fit Sir Alex would have included him and so would Fabio Capello for England. Lets just hope that he can make a full recovery; we don’t want to see him retiring.

Evra: Sir Alex Is Like A Child

Football - Manchester United v Manchester City Carling Cup Semi Final Second Leg
Man United defender Patrice Evra has revealed that Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is like a ‘child’ when he is watching a football match. It’s all good though, Sir Alex hasn’t gone soft, when things are bad he will still use the ‘hairdryer treatment’.

"Sir Alex is a child," The Sun quote Evra as saying.

"We saw it against Manchester City. He's so passionate. He was jumping up and down like a child after that game.

"You could be forgiven for thinking he'd never won a game before!

"At 70 [sic], he doesn't see himself taking it easy at home reading a book or watching TV. Personally I think that would bore him.

"I don't think he will call an end to his career. As long as he's strong he will carry on.

"He will stay until his last breath."

"Manchester United is a factory workers' club. You have to respect that culture.

"It's a club where we work hard. They will not congratulate you after each win. Sir Alex frequently says 'Well done my son' and that says it all.

"For them it's normal when you play a good game.

"It's normal to win the championship. It's Manchester United.

"We don't have the right to make mistakes."

"I do what I have to on the pitch. I'm not like Ferguson's son. But as soon as I'm not good, Ferguson will give me the 'hairdryer'."
